William Carey was an ordinary man, born into a humble family in the 18th century. He was a shoemaker and during his young years he read lots of books on theology and journals of explorers. God used these to inspire him and gave him a burden for evangelism. His future didn’t look too bright. But God had plans for him. Against all odds, he went to India as a missionary, and not only did he do the work of an evangelist but he learned Indian languages into which he translated the Word of God. Carey’s passion for missions is expressed by his words: “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.” He attempted great things for God and God is still using his life and ministry to inspire thousands to do missionary service.
William Carey was a man of extraordinary faith. And God used him greatly for His glory. The key to expect great things from God and attempt great things for God is to realize that God is the one working in us, giving us the power and desire to do what pleases Him and it is not our strength ( Philippians 2:13).
Hebrews 11 is a chapter where we see the Hall of faith, a roll call of heroes and heroines of faith. By faith they did great things for the glory of God.
“who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.”
Hebrews 11:33-34 ESV
Expecting great things from God requires faith in God. That is what we see in Hebrews chapter 11.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation.”Hebrews 11:1-2 ESV
Romans 10 says faith comes by hearing and hearing of God’s word. That faith we receive by His word will be dead without actions. Faith requires action. An action from our side, an attempt to do great things and good things for the glory of God. Here is an example quote my mom told me when I was young “ when you pray to God Almighty for rain, be sure to take your umbrella when you are going out”. And I thought that is such a great example. So I pray to God that, in the coming days you will exercise your faith. Expect great things from God and attempt great things for Him, grounding all your efforts and dreams in God’s grace. Let us look to Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith and run this race with endurance. May Christ be glorified 🙌.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV
May God bless you!.
