“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” Luke 7:47 NIV
These are the words of Jesus to Simon, a Pharisee. Jesus was eating at Simon’s house. An immoral woman in that city heard about Jesus, came to this home where Jesus is. She didn’t just come to see Jesus. She came with such boldness and courage, determined to do something for Jesus, that felt very strange for the people gathered there.
She has in her hands a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. She is kneeling down at His feet, and weeping. And tears from her eyes are falling on Jesus feet. Now what is she doing?…She is wiping those tears with her hair. She doesn’t stop there, then she kept kissing his feet while putting perfume on them!!!!.
While I was reading through these verses, I was reminded of this verse from 1 John – “there is no fear in love and perfect love drives out fear” (verse 18). This woman is full of love for Jesus. Her heart is filled with love, gratitude and worship for Jesus. So she is not worried about what others are thinking about her act or what the world think who she is . She is not concerned about the cost of the perfume. Bible scholars calculate the cost of this perfume as $54,509. I don’t know how much exactly the cost is, but Bible says this was an expensive perfume. She is pouring it all at the feet of Jesus, no holding back!. Such a courageous act of worship.
So the host of this party, Simon couldn’t believe his eyes. He is saying to himself- “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”. How can Jesus let a woman like this to touch Him.?!
I’m thinking everyone else is standing away from her, knowing how sinful she is. May be lots of hatred, judgements and condemnation in their minds. But Jesus turned to this woman and spoke the most precious, compassionate, gracious words she ever heard in her life.
“Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume. I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
Luke 7:44-48 NLT
Jesus noticed every single act of her. He understood how much this woman loves Him. And Jesus said, Her love is more because she is forgiven more.
If only we can understand how much we all are forgiven, our love for Jesus will increase. Comparing ourselves with others and thinking I’m better than him/her is not what we should be doing. Think about the multitude of sins covered by His mercy and grace. Think about the forgiveness we are receiving form Him every day.
Only when we understand How Holy our God is, then only we will understand the depth of our sin!.
We all deserves nothing other than hell. I know it is hard to agree for someone who thinks I’m good and righteous. But think about this; God Almighty is the holy God.. Prophet Habakkuk says like this- “But You are pure and cannot stand the sight of evil”. Habakkuk 1:13a NLT
Our standards of goodness and holiness will never ever measure up to His standards. No matter how much good you are or how many good sacrificing deeds you do, you can never claim to be a perfect person. I heard this quote once-“If we think we are perfect, it just proves we aren’t!”. When God created us He saw everything was good. But because of disobedience we all have fallen short of the glory of God. We all are sinners. Without the Cross of Christ we have no hope. All we have is judgment and condemnation.
Through the Cross, Christ demonstrated His love for us. We didn’t love Him, but He loved us first. While we were sinners He died for us. Now when we trust in His grace, ie everyone who call upon Him, receives mercy, forgiveness and salvation. And we need this forgiveness so desperately. Because without this we are lost and hopeless. The more we draw near to Him, the more we understand the measure of His love for us and we will love Him more and more.
Prophet Isaiah once saw the vision of throne room of God and he cried out saying “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” Isaiah 6:5 NLT.
Apostle Paul wrote like this in his first letter to Timothy
“This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all.” 1 Timothy 1:15 NLT
This explains the love and passion apostle Paul had for Christ and towards the message of gospel. Paul’s love for God drove out every fear. He was equipped by the power of the Holy Spirit, so he went and boldly proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
How do we show this love towards Him?
Jesus said those who love me will obey my commandments (John 14:21). For this woman at the feet of Jesus, it was the boldness she showed in worshipping Jesus. For Isaiah and apostle Paul , they surrendered their life completely for the will of God and proclaimed the words of God, gospel of Christ courageously to the generation. They all were unashamed of the gospel.
He who is forgiven more will love Jesus more and he who is forgiven little will love Him little. Jesus is ready to forgive, are you willing to accept His forgiveness.?! . To the woman Jesus said these words before she left- “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Luke 7:50 NLT
Put your complete faith in a Jesus. And you will have peace and eternal life with Him.
“Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.” Proverbs 17:9 NLT
