Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness!. For example here we see that, we do not know what to pray for. But Holy Spirit is God and He knows our hearts because He formed it. (“he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds.” Psalm 33:15 ESV). So even when we don’t know what we have to pray for or what is the best thing to pray for; Holy Spirit know what we need and He intercedes on our behalf. He helps us to pray effectively.
You do not need any meditators. Jesus Christ is our mediator.(1 Timothy 2:5,6) Holy Spirit Himself intercedes for us.!
I was really encouraged to pray more when I read this verse. It is really comforting to know that we are not supposed to know every time exactly what to pray for!. But just don’t stop praying. When you can’t put your prayers into words, God hears your heart!.
There were times I didn’t pray for things because I was not sure if it is really the will of God in that specific situation. Sometimes I am not able to find the right words to pray with. But here the verse says we do not know what to pray for as we ought. It is okay that you are not sure if that is the best thing to pray for or not. But that shouldn’t stop you from praying. No one is perfect. Humble yourself in the presence of God and present your needs.
Not sure of knowing what to pray for is not unbelief.
It is our weakness that Holy Spirit is willing to helps us with. Our faith doesn’t depend on our ability or understanding of our needs. Our faith depends on knowing who God is and believing that He hear us and answer us according to His will.
Apostle Paul says he prayed to God for healing and he didn’t receive it. But God said His grace is enough. David prayed for the deliverance of his son in Bathsheba. David prayed to God for the baby. David refused to eat or drink. He went into his house and stayed there and lay on the ground all night. But on the seventh day the baby died. We see when Jesus was washing the feet of disciples Peter is asking if Jesus could wash his feet, hand and head!. But Jesus replied he is clean and right now he needs only washing of his feet.
While bible talks about specific prayers so many times, it doesn’t condemn you from praying even when you are unsure of what to pray for. In fact word of God says that we should pray at all times in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18). Philippians 4:6-7 says Don’t worry about anything but pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done. So give your burdens to God, have faith in Him and let Him do what He only can do.
Holy Spirit is interceding FOR us and not against us!.
Another encouragement from this verse is that, the Spirit prays FOR us. All of our thoughts are known to God. He can understand what is in the mind of the Spirit, as the Spirit prays for God’s people.
He searches us and pleads for us believers in accordance with the will of God, His good, pleasing and perfect will. And when God answers that prayer, be rest assured that it will be for our good. Whatever be the answer He gives we will have peace with it.
We often pray for what we want; But God gives what we need!.
Have you ever wondered how you were able to come out of a situation victoriously and peacefully even when you didn’t get exactly what you prayed for?. You may be in a very difficult situation and you are praying for deliverance and healing, but then God will work in different ways and we may not receive the exact answer we are expecting. And when God gives you the answer you will see that that is what you really needed at that moment.
Many times God has answered me in the most unexpected ways to my prayers. There are times that I got completely opposite answers for my prayers. I pray for success and I don’t receive it. I pray for healing and it doesn’t happen. Then God taught me this valuable lesson. Often times we don’t get the answer we expect because God knows that is not what we need. So when I failed, I realized God was teaching me to deal with my pride. When I didn’t get the healing, God was teaching me patience and empathy. When I didn’t get the things I prayed for, God was teaching me contentment. God’s ways, thoughts and plans are higher than ours. While we see our present need, God sees our future.!
“You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”
James 4:2-3 ESV
When you receive what you prayed for thank God. When you don’t receive what you prayed for thank God!. Give thanks in all circumstances.
Our children in their pure heart pray for different things. One day our son prayed that God will help him to eat candies and candies only for breakfast, lunch and dinner!. Our daughter once prayed that in the middle of the summer God will send snow!!. They prayed that they could buy the entire Walmart. When they forget a good dream, they prayed if God could help them remember it and interpret dreams like Joseph and Daniel. When they are bored sitting in car because of traffic blocks, they prayed if the car could fly above the traffic. When they don’t like the food, they prayed that the food in front of them will suddenly become a chick-fil-A burger!…. but as they are growing , they are learning that is not how it works!.
So when we don’t receive the answer we desire, through those prayers we will grow in spiritual maturity and we will understand that was not the right desire!. We will get better in our prayers.
Pray with faith
Pray with faith. Faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He is able. And then be confident that He hear your prayers. Don’t stop praying. Pray until you receive the answer from Him. It may not be what you wanted, but we will receive an answer according to His will!!.
Pray without ceasing
Scripture talks about persistent prayers. Jesus used the parable of the cruel judge and persistent widow to teach His disciples the importance of persistent prayers. (Luke 18:1-8). After that Jesus asked this question to the hearers,
“And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?”
Luke 18:7 ESV
And he said
“I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?””
Luke 18:8 ESV
The widow here knew her request was genuine and right. So she was persistent in her requests. And finally the judge did the right thing!. Yes, God will do the right thing!!.
Paul says in his letter to Thessalonians like this,
“pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 ESV
It is good to write down your prayer points and pray persistently about it. God expects us to pray fervently, earnestly and continually. Jesus taught us how to pray. So pray for everything. Pray with a humble heart, with a heart that will yield to God’s will and rejoice in Him. I have heard this quote in my very young age about writing the prayer journal.
Wait upon Him
Sometimes we have to patiently wait for Gods perfect time. He has made all things beautiful in its time. When we are ready to receive it He will give it. Until then be strong and wait upon Him. Faithful is He who has promised.!
“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.”
Hebrews 10:35-36 ESV
So continue fighting the battles on your knees. Come before God with confidence. Bible says “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16 ESV
Pray for all that God puts in your heart. Do not complicate prayer. Jesus said “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”John 14:13-14 ESV.
Just pray what you got!. Pray for His kingdom to come and His will be done. Pray with faith, pray without ceasing, because prayer does make a difference.
Finally let me share this beautiful quotes I read very recently in an article.
“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” – Martin Luther
