What happens when we make a mistake?! What happens when we don’t do something God wants us to do? or what happens when we do something God asked us not to do?
“To err is human to forgive is divine”.
Sometimes when I make tea or coffee, because of my carelessness and mistake it will boil and spill over the stove. This has happened couple of times. Then we have to remove everything of that burner and clean it inside out. And after cleaning it will look good and ready to be used again. Definitely spilling milk over the hot burner has its own consequences. But one good thing that came out of it is that now that burner is squeaky clean😀
Mistakes happen in our life all the time. And they have consequences. I have made so many mistakes in my life. Definitely I’m not proud of those mistakes. Sometimes I wish if I could go back in time and fix those mistakes. But we cannot change our past; but we all can learn form our mistakes . And when we give that to God’s hand , Almighty God can mend our mistakes and bring something beautiful out of it that will bring glory and honor to His name.
It is good to remember that
- God Almighty, never makes any mistakes , nor did He make a mistake creating you and me!!
- No one is perfect except God Almighty.
- Your mistakes doesn’t mean God can never use you.
- And He is not finished with you yet.
Lessons from Prophet Jonah
These are so many examples in the Bible about God using imperfect people for His glory. Let us look into the life of prophet Jonah. He was given a specific prophecy in which God asked him to ARISE, GO TO NINEVEH AND CRY OUT AGAINST IT; Jonah did ARISE,but instead of going to Nineveh, he decided TO FLEE FROM THE PRESENCE OF GOD TO TARSHISH.
Consequences of his mistake
And we read in the book of Jonah chapter 1 that, GOD SENT OUT A GREAT WIND and the ship on which Jonah was traveling was about to be broken up. They had to throw out their precious cargos to lighten the load of the ship.
The marines were afraid they cried out to their own gods, but Jonah was fast asleep in the lowest part of the ship. Then they cast lots to find out who caused this trouble and the lot fell on Jonah.
Repentance and Declaration of his faith.
And when they asked him about why this happened; we see this wonderful statement of Jonah about his faith.
“Jonah answered, “I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.”
Jonah 1:9 NLT
And the very next verse says the men were exceedingly afraid. Then we read that Jonah admitted his mistake and requested them to throw him into the waters.
“Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.”
Jonah 1:12 NLT
Though the men tried so hard to control the ship, it was getting more worse. Finally they threw him out of the ship and the storm stopped at once.
Mistake into a Miracle
And what happened next is the part where God turns Jonah’s mistake and the the mess that created into something really beautiful.
“The sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power, and they offered him a sacrifice and vowed to serve him.
Jonah 1:16 NLT
The sailors of the boat who didn’t knew The Almighty God, were amazed by His great power and they offered Him sacrifices and they decided to serve Him. That was an awesome work of God!!
And what happened to Jonah? Did God decided not to use him because he made this mistake and decided to flee from His presence? No, but instead God provided for him even in the deep seas.
“Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.”
Jonah 1:17 NLT
And we read in the next chapters, how God used this same Jonah to take the message to Nineveh and to fulfill His plans.
What we understand from Jonah’s life is that
- He understood his mistake and he acknowledged it.
- Even in the midst of the storm and all the unrest caused by his fault, yet he held onto his faith in Almighty God.
- And he proclaimed it boldly before the unbelieving sailors.
Psalms 19 says
“Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.”
Psalms 19:12 NKJV. May this be our prayer to God everyday. Bible is very clear that we all need forgiveness.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
I John 1:9 NKJV
When we accept the fact that we are not perfect and mistakes happen in our earthly life, it becomes more easy for us to trust God. And while these mistakes have consequences, it is not the end. God still loves you and He can still use you. There is this phrase I read recently in a book: ‘Broken crayons still color’. That means no matter whatever mistakes you did, or how broken you are; you still got life and purpose in you. God is not done with you yet. Give yourself into the hands of the Master and He will use you and will create something beautiful out of your life.
To Him be the glory 🙌
