“But God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and “All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil.
If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work. Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.”
2 Timothy 2:19, 21-22 NLT
Here Apostle Paul laid out the formula for leading a life Holy and pleasing to the Master.
- Turn away from wickedness
- Run from temptations.
Very simple at first look. But this takes genuine effort and intentionality and above all fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
This is a prayer that my mother taught me in my childhood days -‘ that Holy Spirit will help me to lead a life that is pleasing in God’s eyes. To be aware of His presence in my life. To know that He sees me and watches over me’.
To understand and turn away from evil we have to walk in the light. When we walk in the light, we will not stumble. When we walk in the light, darkness (evil) has no power over us.
“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
I John 1:5, 7 NKJV
How do we walk in the Light
Read, meditate , practice God’s word.
Ephesians chapter 6 says God’s word is the sword. Use His word to resist the enemy. When we resist the enemy, he will flee from us.(James 4:7).
Word of God is the light (“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”Psalms 119:105 NKJV ).
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”
2 Timothy 3:16 NLT
Give God’s word the rightful place in your life. Not only that we read it, but meditate on it and practice.
Memorize the scriptures. I once came across an article which was about memorizing scriptures. The author wrote this simple formula that actually works.
- Choose a verse.
- Read it 10 times
- speak it 20 times and
- write it 2 times.
“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
Psalms 119:11 NLT
Turn away from Evil
Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on.The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble. Proverbs 4:14-15, 19 NKJV.
Bible says as a result of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, sin passed on to the rest of humanity. Many think of evil people as murderers or terrorists, but the Bible is clear that every person is sinful. The penalty the Bible describes for these sins is death (Romans 6:23). The remedy God provided for us is the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Look to the cross and believe in Him.
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.”
Ephesians 5:8-10 NIV
When we receive Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of our life, we have changed the family. From children of darkness to children of Light. No more we walk in darkness, but we walk in the Light. And Word of God shows us the way.
“But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble.”
Proverbs 4:18-19 NKJV
When we go through a road and we see danger board, we do not proceed to the danger. But we go with caution and turn away from the danger. Or consider the food we eat. The other day we were walking outside, and my 5 year old son saw some wild berries in the bush of our front yard. They looked so red and juicy and yummy. But he remembered what we taught him and no matter how enticing it was, he didn’t bother to pluck it and eat it, instead he turned and walked away from it. Similarly when we read God’s word, when we fellowship with the children of light we will learn to discern what is good and what is evil. And The Holy Spirit will guide us in all truth and will convict us in regard to sin, righteousness and judgement. But will we choose to walk in the light?
One of the students from our bible study asked me. If God knows everything, doesn’t he also know the mistakes I’m going to make in life. and the consequences of it. If so then why is He not stoping me?
The answer is Yes. He knows everything. But God never will push His ways on us, when we ask Him He will guide us. But we have to choose to walk in it. We are adopted into the family of God as His children. Everything that is needed for us to walk in His ways He has provided. But still just like Adam in the garden of Eden many times we choose our ways over God’s ways. The beauty of God’s Love is that, even with all our weaknesses and failures God still loves us. And He so loved us that He gave His own son as a sacrifice for our sins.
Many times when kids disobey parents or rebel against them, parents grieve because of their behavior. But still their love for them doesn’t change. But when they are obedient and listening, parents feel happy and pleased. In the same way, we don’t earn God’s love by our performance. God is Love and He Loves us all; through faith in Jesus Christ by His amazing grace we become His children. But He is pleased and happy when we obey Him and walk in His ways. And when we truly love someone we will do everything to make that person happy. So let us strive to lead a life that is pleasing to God and make him happy.
Run away from temptations
Do not compromise with sin. Something God taught me about is that enemy brings temptations in our life all the time. It is all around us and within us.
“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”
James 1:13-15 NKJV
Being tempted is not sin. But yielding to it is sin. It has power over us when we yield to it.
‘Run from temptations’ what does that mean? Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:13, that our faithful God knows what we are going through and He will always provide a way out in our temptations. Our job is to take that way out and run from situations and environments that will make you yield to temptations. When we are running; it is fast, focused and don’t look back. Don’t stay and dwell in your temptations.
As Psalm 1 says, be aware of your surroundings
- Where are you Standing?
- Where are you sitting ?
- Which way are you walking ?
- Who are you associated with?
Enemy is looking for an opportune time (Luke 4:13). When you feel weak trust in God. Take a moment to pray to God for strength. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Then yield to the voice of Holy Spirit, not to the temptations. Especially we are alone we are more prone to temptations. It says an idle man’s mind is devil’s workshop. In moments you are alone and feel tempted to sin, the best solution is to take the word of God and start reading it. Pray over it. Try to Get out of loneliness and start serving others. Fellowship with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Choose to obey Him. God will give us strength and we can do all things through Him. (Philippians 4:13)
We cannot do everything that the worldly people do. We cannot see everything that they see. Jesus said our eye is the lamp for the whole body. See to it, then, that the light within us is not darkness(Luke 11:35). Be watchful and careful, lest you enter into temptations ( Matthew 26:41).
As The word of God says let us set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
(1 Timothy 4:12)
Apostle John wrote, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
I John 2:15-17 NKJV
Romans 13:14 talks about putting on Jesus and do not even think about gratifying the lustful desires of the flesh. Ephesians 6:10 says put on the armor of God to stand firm against the strategies of devil. Apostle Peter says to resist the devil, steadfast in your faith.
Always keep your standards and moral values aligned with God’s word. And see to it that you keep it. From the life of Daniel and Joseph we can learn so much about this.
For leading a life pleasing in Gods eyes we have to pay price. We have to sacrifice many things in our life. As Paul says in Galatians chapter 5, Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.(24-25 )
And above all remember, the High Priest of ours (Jesus Christ )understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most (Hebrews 4:15-16).
With God all things are possible. He who is in us is greater than who is outside. And in Christ we are more than conquerors. So let us all trust Jesus completely and strive to lead a life pleasing in His sight. God bless 🙏
