“So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.”
II Samuel 5:20 NKJV
“So they went up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. Then David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim. And when they left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.”
I Chronicles 14:11-12 NKJV
In 2 Samuel 5, we read about the incident that led up to this name Baal Perazim.
The word PERAZIM means BREAKTHROUGH. It is used couple of times in the Bible. As Isaiah says in chapter 28, when God does His unusual act or awesome work we see the word Perazim is used there.
“For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim, He will be angry as in the Valley of Gibeon— That He may do His work, His awesome work, And bring to pass His act, His unusual act.”
Isaiah 28:21 NKJV
The Lord did awesome work and unusual act for David in Mount Perazim ( 2 Samuel 5) and for Joshua in Gibeon (Joshua 10).
Breakthrough for David against the Philistines
When the Philistines heard that David is anointed as king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. Philistines went and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. Rephiam means giants.
And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. The stronghold here is Cave of Adullam, where David went to hide from King Saul and his army when they were trying to kill him. From this cave David wrote the Psalm142, Psalm 57 which is a prayer to God his refuge, for safety from the enemies.
Let us look into few verses from these Psalms;
“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, Until these calamities have passed by. I will cry out to God Most High, To God who performs all things for me.”
Psalms 57:1-2 NKJV
“When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, Then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk They have secretly set a snare for me.Attend to my cry, For I am brought very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are stronger than I.”
Psalms 142:3, 6 NKJV
We see in these Psalms David’s honest prayer to God Almighty-
- He is telling God his complaints
- Telling Him all his troubles
- Telling God that he is overwhelmed and God alone knows the ways he should go.
- Telling God that He alone is his refuge and
- All David really want in his life is God alone
- He is praying God to bring him out of prison so he can thank God.
- By Faith, he is proclaiming that the godly will crowd around him, for God is good to him.
So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
See here when the enemies WENT UP against David, he WENT DOWN to his stronghold. David went down to inquire of the Lord.
In 2 Samuel 22: 2&3, we read David saying that God is his rock, his refuge, the shield, the horn of salvation, the stronghold and his refuge and Savior, who saves him from violence.
So when we face the giants, enemies coming up against us, get down on your knees and inquire of the Lord. Receive wisdom, direction from the God. Then go up against the enemies with the strength God gives you.
So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim. And they left their images there, and David and his men carried them away and they burned them all (1 Chronicles 14).
The second victory- Awesome work/Unusual act of God
Then the Philistines went up once again and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. Therefore David inquired of the LORD, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then the LORD will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” And David did so, as the LORD commanded him; and he drove back the Philistines from Geba (Gibeon) as far as Gezer.”
II Samuel 5:17-25 NKJV
We see here God gave David a breakthrough. An awesome work , an unusual act. The Lord went before him.Just like how waters breakthrough every obstacle on its way during the gush of a flood. God Almighty just wiped away and destroyed David’s enemies when he called upon Him.
Breakthrough for Joshua against Amorites- An awesome work/ Unusual act of God.
Prophet Isaiah mentions in chapter 28, the victory Joshua & Gibeonites had against the 5 kings and their armies who came to attack them. The event is mentioned in Joshua 10; There we see The Lord routed them before Israel and large hailstones were cast down from heaven on them and they died. God gave them a great breakthrough. An awesome work , an unusual act.
The God of breakthrough goes before us!!
“He who opens the breach goes up before them; they break through and pass the gate, going out by it. Their king passes on before them, the Lord at their head.”
Micah 2:13 ESV
Here Prophet Micah says about the restoration of Israel, that we will have breakthroughs when Jesus, the King, goes before us. When He goes before us, in other words if we are following Him we will have breakthroughs in our life.
Praying for your breakthrough:
Often times we pray to God for breakthroughs in difficult situations. From the life of David, we see that we should first inquire of the Lord. David heard about the enemies surrounding him, he went into the stronghold. In the prayer in Psalms 142, David wrote from the stronghold , we see David pouring his heart out before God. This is a good example for us to follow.
- When you pray, pour out your heart before God. A genuine sincere prayer before God who knows you inside out.
- When we tell God that we don’t know the way and ask His guidance. He will go before us and make ways by breaking through every obstacles in our life.
- All we have to do is just follow Him.
Upon the wicked The Lord will come as he did against the Philistines at Mount Perazim and against the Amorites at Gibeon.
What should we do after the breakthrough?
God gives us breakthroughs when we trust in Him. And after the breakthroughs draw even more closer to him.
Also after the breakthrough David had against his enemies, we see David commanding his people to burn all the idols the enemies left behind.
- When God gives us breakthrough, remember to come more closer him.
- Don’t take for yourself anything that belongs to the enemy. We know from Joshua 7, what happened to Achan when he took for himself the things of the enemy
When the Almighty God decides to use a person as an instrument in His hands, nothing can stop His plan. God Himself will go before that chosen person and make the crooked ways straight and will break down every walls.
See what God Almighty says to Cyrus, His instrument, in Isaiah 44;
“‘I will go before you And make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze And cut the bars of iron.”
Isaiah 45:2 NKJV
Bible says we are God’s chosen called out of darkness into the marvelous light to proclaim His goodness. Let us go forward and do everything God has called us for and prepared beforehand for us.
“The God of breakthrough’s on our side ,
Forever lift Him high,
With all creation cry, God, we praise You….”
From Song – ‘Praise You’ by Matt Redman
May God bless you all.
