Fear of The Lord!

“Who is the man that fears the LORD? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭25:12‬ ‭NKJV

Fear of God is something that we hear a lot these days. Especially with the current situation of the world around us, we pray to God to give people fear of God. We pray to God to fill us, our children and our leaders with the fear of God.

Why do we need fear of God or what happens when there is no fear of God?

We understand from the scriptures where there is no fear of God, people will turn away from God and sin will increase and we perish. And isn’t that is what we are seeing right now in this world? People are living in such a way that they don’t believe in the living God or fear Him who sees and knows and controls everything.

Apostle Paul talks about the condition of the world when there is no fear of God- “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with lies. Snake venom drips from their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. They rush to commit murder. Destruction and misery always follow them. They don’t know where to find peace. They have no fear of God at all.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:13-18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

How do we learn to fear God?

We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. In our sinful nature, we have no fear of God. We have to turn from our wicked ways and seek Him. Only when we understand His greatness and awesomeness, then only we will be able to fear Him. We Psalms 86:11 we read like this

“Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭86:11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Here are few ways on how we learn to fear the Lord:-

  • A heart that is focused on God Almighty will help us to fear Him.
  • When we read the scriptures we understand how when people encountered God they demonstrated a deep reverence for Him. We see that when we learn about Moses,Elijah, Daniel, Saul who became Paul, John the apostle in the book of Revelation and many more.
  • Often times we see when God reveals His power through the nature people learn to fear Him. That is how Israelites learned to fear God. Also the people at the time of Jesus death on the cross and during His resurrection ,we learn how they learned to fear God and acknowledged Jesus is the son of God, when they saw the Power of Christ that was revealed through the nature.
  • When we learn and meditate on God’s word we learn to fear God. We read in Deuteronomy 31 that Moses is commanding the Priests and elders to read the word of God, that the people may learn to fear God. That is why it is important to teach our children Gods word and as David says “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”Psalms‬ ‭119:11‬ ‭NIV‬‬.

What is the fear of the Lord ?

God is our loving Father. 1 John 4:8 says God is Love. Not only that Hebrews 4:16 calls us to boldly come to His presence with confidence. So how can we love God and fear God at the same time? Look at these verses:

Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭20:20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭8:13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭32:40‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

So fear of the Lord is to hate evil . we should have the fear of God, which will keep us from sinning. Love of God leads us to the cross and cleanses us and covers the multitude of our sins which will gives us a way to enter His presence. But we should have the fear of God and that is what will help us to stay in His presence.

What is the result when we fear God?

We saw already that fear of God helps us to hate evil. To those who Fear of God, He will teach him His ways. Let us look into few more results of Fearing God.

1) Fear of God gives us wisdom, Knowledge and Life

What does that mean?

  • Psalms 111:10/ Proverbs 9:10 says – Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
  • Proverbs 1:7 says – Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Knowledge.
  • Proverbs 14:27 says – Fear of the Lord is a fountain of life.
  • Job 28:28 says- The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.

We all pray to God for wisdom and Knowledge . Especially before taking any important decisions, taking exams or few of us every morning we pray to God to give us wisdom. So wisdom comes from the Fear of God, when we keep away from evil. When we fear God, He will show us the way that we should go, He will show us what to do. Then we decide to choose God’s ways over our ways, obeying Him even if it is hard for us. And that is true wisdom that comes with the fear of God.

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.”
‭‭James‬ ‭3:17‬ ‭NLT‬‬
And that is what the world needs right now. For everyone wisdom from above. And that starts with the fear of God!!!

2) When we fear God we will become friends of God.

“The Lord is a friend to those who fear him. He teaches them his covenant.” Psalms‬ ‭25:14‬ NLT In another version it says “The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, And He will show them His covenant.”NKJV‬‬

We all desire to be the friend of God, right? There is a song that says- ‘I am a friend of God and HE calls me friend’.

So if you want to be the Lord’s friend to whom He will reveal His secrets, there is a way- FEAR THE LORD!!!!

In 2 chronicles:20:7, Isaiah 41:8 and James 2:23 we see Abraham is mentioned as the friend of God. Because He feared God , believed in Him. He was even ready to sacrifice his promise son Issac on the altar when God asked him to. He trusted and obeyed God completely.

In Exodus 33:11 we see Moses is referred as God’s friend and it say the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Because Moses feared God and was faithful before Him.

“You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
‭‭John‬ ‭15:14-15‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
This verse clearly says we are God’s friends when we do whatever He commands us. And we understand from the same passage before He calls us friend we have to be a servant. A faithful servant who obeys whatever the master commands becomes His friend.

Fear the Lord, hate evil, Obey Him, obey His word and we will be called the friends of Almighty God. Fear of God is to hate sin and live in obedience to His word. It is a deep, Holy, reverence to God and His word. And that is the beginning of wisdom which we all are seeking. When we fear the Lord, we will not have to fear anything else. Because God will help us, strengthen us and uphold us with His righteous right hand🙌

So as we wait for our King Jesus’s return, let us strive each day to live in obedience to His word. Let there be a fear of God in our lives. Let us come to His presence with reverence. When we read Psalms 112, we see how God blesses even our generations when we fear the Lord.

“Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭112:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The wise King Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”NIV

May God bless you all❤️🙏
