Few weeks ago while I was in the kitchen doing the dishes, I was thinking about so many things and my thoughts were going everywhere . Suddenly this thought out of nowhere came to my mind and it was like God asking me “ will you make yourself available for me?”. And my immediate response was ‘Yes, I am available’. Then I realized what God wants from me is to make my mind , my thoughts also to be available for Him. And right there in the kitchen I said Yes to Him.
Even after saying yes, it was not easy. It is an act of daily surrender. I had to remind myself to keep my heart and mind open for Holy Spirit to work through me.
One of my dear friend recently was sharing her experience about the ways that God is using her as a blessing in the lives of the people around her. The only thing she did is that, she surrendered her life completely to Holy Spirit, with all her weaknesses. And God started pouring into her life and He is using her as a prophetess these days to declare healing and deliverance to the people who are in need.
I have mentioned in one of my previous blogs that Holy Spirit uses our conscience to talk to us. But what we have to understand is that, He will never push himself onto us. We have to choose to listen.
Recently one of the students from our bible study group asked me this question;
How can we know if it is the Holy Spirit who is talking to us?
Honestly, I also struggled with the same question.
But this is what Holy Spirit taught me. Jesus said we can know a tree by its fruit. And that is how we know our thoughts are from Holy Spirit or not.
When your conscience speaks, if you know that
- it is aligned with the Word of God and
- it is going to bring glory to God alone
then you can be sure that it is from God. And from my experience, let me encourage you that the more you listen and obey, the more He speaks.
How can I make my mind available for God, how can I control my thoughts?
Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 10:5 talks about capturing rebellious thoughts and teaching them to obey Christ.
Can we really do that? How can a person control his thoughts?
There was a time I thought it is impossible. What changed my understanding is when God started speaking to me through the Book of Philippians.
Look at this verse from Philippians;
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Philippians 4:8 NLT
Here apostle Paul clearly says we can pick and choose what we want to think about.
The natural way of human mind is to think the worst. I heard this saying ‘ Hope for the best, but expect the worst’!!! But that is the way of the world.
For a person who is led by Holy Spirit, we hope and expect for the best. Because our confidence is on none other than Jesus himself.
It is not that we will not have worries and troublesome thoughts. We just have to stop those thoughts from getting worse and turn it all into pure, honorable thoughts and praise for Jesus.
- When we feel lonely, we have a choice to make . Are we going to feel depressed and discouraged and turn into momentary pleasures for temporary satisfaction?!! or will we turn to the word of God and let Holy Spirit talk to us. We can choose to get out from that state of loneliness and start serving others. In that way we turn each and every thought into praises for God.
- When we feel discouraged and no one to cheer us up , instead of going deep into sadness we can choose to delight on the fact that God sees us and He loves us. And the thought that we are known by the Almighty God is just enough for us to cheer up. Even with all our weakness and failures He never leaves us, but always loves us. Then find someone who needs encouragement and start serving that person.
In this way, every rebellious and negative thoughts we bring into obedience to Christ. Thus making room for HolySpirit to work through us.
Sometime ago I read this about D.L Moody’s life. How he was inspired by his friend Henry Varley, a British revivalist ,who told him, “Moody, the world has yet to see what God will do with a man fully consecrated to Him?”. And later Moody prayed and surrendered to God saying – “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man fully consecrated to Him. By God’s help, I aim to be that man.” And we know how God used him greatly in His arms. This famous evangelist was only sixty-two years old when he died, he had already preached the gospel to more than 100 million people. All because he made himself fully available and consecrated to God.
We all want God to hear us and see us. But how often do we try to listen to Him?
Bible clearly says God is with us. His name is Immanuel.
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.” Matthew 1:23 NLT
We learn from the scriptures that during the time of Jesus ministry on earth, even people who were His own and many who lived in that generation didn’t receive Him or listened to Him. “He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.”John 1:11
Isn’t that what is happening in our generation too? We are so busy with our life and sometimes even busy with our ministry and don’t take time to stop and listen to the Holy Spirit. We are propelled by our own goals and agendas.
When Jesus went to heaven He didn’t leave us orphans . He gave His Spirit to be with us. To guide us in all truth and to make us aware of sin, righteousness and judgement.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.”
John 14:16-18 NLT
Bible clearly says “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”
Romans 8:11 NLT.
That is such a powerful verse. How often do we realize and acknowledge His presence? Such great power, God has put inside of us and we forget that all the time.
Once you recognize the Holy Spirit and start listening and obeying Him, God will start using you in ways you cannot even imagine.
We often hear this phrase- ‘God is not looking at our ability, but our availability’!!. That is so true. Let us surrender ourselves completely to God’s hand, with all our weaknesses. Bible says His strength works best in our weakness.
Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT
Look at this verse from Ephesians.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
I really like the Message translation of this verse;
“God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. Glory to God in the church! Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus! Glory down all the generations! Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes!”
Ephesians 3:20-21 MSG
And that is what we see all throughout in the book of Acts. In chapter 2 of Acts, we see how Peter who was a fisherman, was used by the Holy Spirit. Through that one sermon, 3000 people received the word, got baptized and were added to the church. And yes, God is still looking for people who are fully consecrated to Him.
So let us all take some genuine effort these days to change our thought patterns. Listen to the Holy Spirit and even when we disagree let us choose to obey Him. To God be the glory🙌
