Hiding from God or Hiding in God?!!!

Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?” says the Lord.
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭23:24‬.

“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.”
Psalms 57:1

In Joshua 7, Bible talks about the battle between Israelites and the city called Ai. Even though they were very weak and less in number than Israelites, the people of Ai defeated Joshua and his army. Because one person (Achan) sinned against God and decided to hide his sin. But he couldn’t hide it from All knowing, omnipresent, Almighty God who’s eyes are everywhere. God was angry at the Israelites and they lost the battle.

So from where did this hiding from God start? It started in the garden of Eden.

God created man in the garden of Eden to have fellowship with him. But Man sinned against God. Because of the fear of the consequences and shame of the sin, we started hiding. Sin, fear, shame and hiding stopped us from having fellowship with God. To cover the nakedness because of our sin, God made garments for us using animal skin. And since God hate sin, and to prevent any further causalities , He sent us out from the beautiful garden He created for us. But He also provided a plan for our redemption.

Lessons from the garden:-

  • God created man for fellowship.
  • Man chose to disobey God.
  • We hide because of shame and fear.
  • While we were in our sins, God came in search of us.
  • He made garments to cover our nakedness.
  • He provided His plan for our redemption

Generations passed and sin increased. But Almighty God longed for our fellowship and he wanted to dwell among the people. He gave us laws to obey so we can live peacefully, pleasing God. He established sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins. But we all rejected God and His ways.

And that is what we see in Joshua chapter 7. Man rejected the ways of God, disobeyed Him and tried to hide that sin.

Now what happened in the battle of Ai? Let us look into that:

Joshua after their great historic victory against Jericho, sent out men to spy the land of Ai. They came back and gave promising reports. So Joshua sent 3000 men for the battle and they were soundly defeated by Ai and about thirty-six of Israelite men were killed in that battle. The Israelites were paralyzed with fear at this turn of events, and their courage melted away.

So Joshua and the elders of Israel tore their clothing in dismay, threw dust on their heads, and bowed face down to the ground before the Ark of the Lord until evening.

Joshua cried out to the Lord and the Lord answered him to Get up and deal with the hidden sin in their midst. God told Joshua that they have stolen some of the things that He commanded must be set apart for Him. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings. That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. Israel has brought this destruction upon themselves. And God said that He will not remain with them any longer unless they destroy the things among them that were set apart for destruction.

So Joshua got up from there and the next day early morning , as God commanded , he called the assembly of Israelites and presented them by tribes, and the Lord pointed out the tribe of Judah to which the guilty man belong. Then the clans of Judah came forward, and the clan of Zerah was singled out. Then the families of Zerah came forward, and the family of Zimri was singled out. Every member of Zimri’s family was brought forward person by person, and Achan was singled out.

And so Achan realized he is caught and confessed his sin. The. he and his family was punished for death because of their sin according to the law God gave through Moses for Israelites.

And after dealing with the sin in their midst, God asked them to attack Ai again. And because God was with them they had a great victory.

Lesson from the battle of Ai- Joshua 7

  • No matter how many promises you have, unless you confess your sins and turn from wicked ways, God cannot fulfill those promises in your life.
  • You may have experienced great victories in the past, you may be equipped with all the weapons, you may have very good strategies, you may even have an army of great soldiers with you. But all this is useless if Lord God is not with you.
  • Do not underestimate your enemy; You are strong only because God is with you; Sin separates us from God and without God you are a zero.
  • Before spying the weakness of your enemy and deciding on strategies, see if you have anything unclean in your life.
  • You may have lost a battle. You may be discouraged. But God is not done with you yet. If you choose to seek him with your whole heart and cry before God’s presence and deal with the sins in your life, you will see and enjoy victories again.

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:13‬ ‭

“Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the LORD of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts.”
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭1:3‬ ‭

So are you tired because of the failures in your life. Are you discouraged because of past defeats? You do not have to look anywhere else for answers. Look into your own life and ask this question:- What am I trying to hide from God? Is there any unconfessed sins in my life?

Whatever it may be confess it before God and turn from your wicked ways. Walk in light, so that you are not hiding anything.

The good news is Jesus already took the punishment for our sins upon him on that cross, and we we don’t have to die in our sins. Believe in Him and receive His forgiveness. And walk in fellowship with Him.

Bible says in 1 John‬ ‭1:7-9‬

  • “But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and
  • the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
  • If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.
  • But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” ‭

Please do not try to hide from God. It is impossible. Look what David found out after he tried to hide from God.

And in Psalms 139 David says “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.”

“People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭28:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

So as God reveals the sins in your life, confess them and forsake them and walk in fellowship with God. Jesus is coming back to take us with Him to heaven where there is no more pain and no more sorrows . A beautiful home He is preparing for us. Let us not loose that because of the sins we hold on to. It is not worth loosing eternity!!!!

And for those who confess their sins and return to God, He promises them shelter and protection under His wings. The only place you should be hiding is under the shelter of God. That is the place of your refuge.

“Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭17:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭57:1‬ NLT

So let us not hide from God; but hide in Him. God bless you.🙏💛
