True Humility

“Lord, may I decrease & You increase”

Yesterday I asked my little girl what is humility? She said humility is one being humiliated!!!!!😂. That got me thinking and often we use humility as an excuse to hide from circumstances , fearing the humiliation.

From very young age, we hear the word humility. We even teach our kids to be humble.Over the years the definition of humility has changed in our society. And it is very different now compared to what we saw in our parents or grandparents generation.

Humility according to dictionary is the quality of being humble and means putting the needs of another person before your own, and thinking of others before yourself. It also means not drawing attention to yourself, and it can mean acknowledging that you are not always right.

There was a time when silence was considered as a sign of humility. Even if you have an opinion in a matter, if you speak without being asked you were considered rebellious and proud. Where I grew up, in our grandparents time, when guests come to a house, women especially young women and children were not supposed to come and talk to them. That was sign of humility. But it changed over the years and now if you don’t come and talk to a guest it is considered rude.

Anyways that will keep on changing as generations come and go. And we will adapt, at least I hope so😀.

Now let us try to understand what is humility according to the word of God. Inside the kingdom of God, the textbook is bible. And bible explains humility very well. And I believe it is good for everyone to know, because that is the best definition/explanation ever. And God wants us to be humble and He opposes the proud ( James 4:6). And we all can agree that, we do not want to be on the opposite side of God!!

First let us understand that Humility is not a weakness; it is a strength.

The perfect example of humility in Bible is Jesus Christ himself.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:3-11‬

John the Baptist was a humble servant of God, whom God sent to prepare way for Jesus. he said like this – “He (Christ) must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30
C. S Lewis quotes like this – “Humility is not thinking less about yourself; it’s just thinking about yourself less.” So when we understand humility, it is thinking about ourselves less and thinking about God more. Focussing on Christ being magnified in our life.

Let us look into what Jesus said about humility;

“Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭20:26-28‬ ‭

Jesus came to this world to serve others. He humbled himself in service to the mankind. So Jesus led a life of service. His entire life was about serving others with everything He has, and not self serving. If we do not understand humility in the right way, we will become proud and will be self serving and selfish.

Humility is not thinking you are a good for nothing person.

We are God’s image bearers. Bible says “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”Ephesians‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭.

God has put His spirit inside of us.

“And God has given us His Spirit as proof that we live in Him and He in us”. 1 John 4:13

All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. 1 John‬ ‭4:15

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:20

With the help of Holy Spirit, we are good for everything God has planned for us beforehand. Each person is created by God for a specific purpose. So will you trust the Holy Spirit to guide you? Today in our women’s bible study , we learned about cooperating with Holy Spirit. In the study Priscilla Shirer mentions- “Your conscience is the microphone the Holy Spirit uses to allow you to hear the voice of God in your life”. Yes, His Spirit is in us, and He is actively speaking to us; so listen to the Holy Spirit and do what he says.

Humility starts with these realizations

1) we are not here for ourselves

2) we are here for a divine purpose.

3) we cannot fulfill our purpose in this life without the help of The Almighty God.

Once we realize that, what do we do?

We make ourselves available for His good works that He has planned for us.

What is the end result?

Not us, but Christ will be glorified in everything we do. And in His presence we will be called ‘good and faithful servant’!!

In Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus talks about the parable of talents. This is a good example of humility and service. The first two servants were humble enough to honor the master the understand his will. So they used their talents very well so the master said “ Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

But to the wicked servant, because pride blinded his eyes, he had a different understanding of the master and he hid his talents. So the master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant!”( Luke 19:22) so the master commanded to throw the worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”
‭‭It really matters, how we understand the master. With the same measure we use, it will be measured to us( Matthew 7:2).

So let us walk in humility, serving others using the talents God gave us, for His glory. May God use our lives to bring many to the saving knowledge of the Truth. Let not pride blind our eyes , we are what we are by the Grace of God. We belong to Him. To Him be the glory 🙌.
